Applicant overview: In 1983 the Deputy Chief Probation Officer, West Midlands circulated to Southfield Trustees a proposal to establish a volunteer led pre-court mediation scheme and a court based restitution scheme. A pilot project in this field was the Coventry Centre. A second proposal was made for a mediation centre in Solihull. Nature of support: Much of the interest in mediation and reparation schemes by the Cadbury Trusts relates to research and fact finding work. The Southfield Trust recommended a grant of £2,000 to allow an observer to travel to the US to research best proactive in mediation and reparation. The resulting observations were intended to inform a report on best practice for the UK. In 1983 Southfield Trustees also recommended that £2,000 towards the Coventry restitution feasibility study. In 1984 the same observer, then employed at the Coventry Centre, received £450 from the Fund to attend mediation courses and conferences in Europe and £1,500 from the Trust for an additional trip to the US.
