| Description | Grant file containing correspondence, minutes, reports, agendas, newspaper cuttings, discussion papers and funding requests relating to the Winson Green Wives and Families Centre (WGWFC). Funding source(s): Barrow and Geraldine S. Cadbury Trust, Southfield Trust. Applicant overview: WGWFC was formed in 1969 by the Winson Green Wives and Families Centre Organisation and became a registered charity in 1970. The objectives of the organisation are to give supportive aid to wives, families, children and dependents of people who have suffered a legal restriction from their liberty and who are, or have been, detained at Winson Green Prison. This was the first such centre established in the UK and was later called The Visitor Centre at Winson Green. Adult visitor numbers per day increased from an average of nine for the financial year 1969 to 1970 to 120 for 1978 to 1979. Nature of support: In 1977 the Trust made a grant of £3,000 to the Visitor Centre on the advice of Southfield Trustees. That same year a further £3,000 was made available for furniture at the centre. Only £1,000 of this total was used though a further £1,000 was put to kitchen improvements. In 1979 another £4,000 was allocated to the centre for amenities and other expenses.
