Applicant overview: In 1989 the Northern Ireland Association for the Care and Resettlement of Offenders (NIACRO) proposed a project to research the lives of two life sentence prisoners released on license, one with a republican background and one with a loyalist background. NIACRO also operates a bursary fund of offenders. Nature of support: In 1986 on the advice of Southfield Trust a single grant of £2,500 plus the agreement to underwrite a further £1,000 was made toward the NIACRO bursary fund. In 1989 the Trust approved a grant of up to £20,000 toward life sentence prisoner research. This grant was subsequently rescinded when the project proved too complex to establish.
