| Description | Grant file containing correspondence, minutes, agendas, grant overview, lists of referrals and funding requests relating to the Sam Sharpe Project (SSP), Wolverhampton. Funding source(s): Barrow and Geraldine S. Cadbury Trust. Applicant overview: SSP was established in 1983 as a result of a report on the disproportionally higher sentences given to black offenders over white offenders. A project was established to work closely with various agencies in the community, and with various arms of the judicial apparatus, particularly the Probation Department, to offer as wide a range of community based alternatives to custodial care for young black offenders as possible, and to work with the above services and the wider community in efforts to eradicate any forms of racism and ignorance which may exist in these services, and which, as a result, may work against the best interests of black people. Nature of support: In 1987 the Trust approved three annual grants of £7,500 in the hope that this support would unlock statutory funding. This grant was rescinded later in 1987 when statutory support was found. Minutes: B&GSCT 6704, B&GSCT 6863. Notes: File organised by date from newest to oldest. File numbered 'JM/S/3'. |
