| Description | Grant file containing correspondence, minutes, funding requests, reports, accounts and agendas relating to the 40 Hall Road Group, later the Handsworth Action Centre. Funding source(s): Barrow and Geraldine S. Cadbury Trust, Barrow Cadbury Fund Ltd. Applicant overview: The 40 Hall Road Group began work in Handsworth area of Birmingham for the purpose of overcoming community problems by supporting other community groups in part through the creation of an advice centre. The group does not view race as a cause of problems though racism may relate to specific problems. Its efforts are based around community issues rather than casework. The membership of the group at the time of its creation in 1969 was primarily white. Subsequently the organisation expanded to premises in Lozells as the Action Centre, later the Handsworth Action Centre. The constitution of the Handsworth Action Centre, drafted in 1982, stated that the objects of the Centre were to a) offer advice on a wide range of subjects to the people of Handsworth, regardless of sex, religion, race or opinion, and b) to establish and run an advice centre with workers. Nature of support: The Fund supported the initial application by the 40 Hall Road Group for a grant to expand their premises followed by a series of annual grants for staff support costs. In 1975 the Fund ceased to provide grants, satisfied that the Group could function effectively after meeting a number of start up costs. In 1979 the Trust began to provide a series of small grants to cover staff costs. Minutes: B&GSCT 3429, B&GSCT 4890, B&GSCT 5367, BCF 1040, BCF 1142, BCF 1342, BCF 1413.
