| Description | Grant file containing correspondence, minutes, newsletters, newspaper cuttings, accounts, reports, copies of published material, agendas and funding requests relating to the London Technical Group (LTG), later the International Disaster Group (IDG). Funding source(s): Barrow and Geraldine S. Cadbury Trust, Barrow Cadbury Fund Ltd. Applicant overview: The LTG was started in 1971 by a group of postgraduate students of various sciences who were concerned with the effects of the East Pakistan cyclone and the war in Bangladesh. The LTG operates under the premise that it is not the initial catastrophe that is the primary cause of disaster in the developing world, but rather the chaos that follows. The LTG is primarily a research organisation seeking to collate and make available scientific data about disasters and disaster relief. It has a particular interest in the role of technology in disaster mitigation. The LTG later became the International Disaster Group (IDG). Nature of support: In 1975 the Fund provided a single grant of £1,000 to the LTG to meet past administrative costs and the overhead of field projects. That same year the Trust approved a series of three annual grants of £5,400 primarily to meet operating costs. The Fund also agreed to provide £500 towards the cost of equipment for a survey in Ethiopia should these costs not be met from other agencies. Minutes: B&GSCT 3891, B&GSCT 3939, BCF 1375, BCF 1408.
