TitleSaltley Gate Actuality 108 - 109 [Maerdy Miners]
LevelFile
Date1973
DescriptionThis envelope contains transcripts of interviews with Maerdy miners about industrial action in Birmingham.

Transcripts 108 and 109 were both recorded on 19/12/1973. 108 includes discussion of the possible use of the army in the miners' strike and the use of undercover police officers on the picket line. Miners' antipathy to far left political agitators becoming involved in the dispute is also noted. Relations between pickets and lorry drivers crossing the picket line are mentioned, as is an accident involving pickets, police officers and a lorry.

109 is a discussion of the events leading up to the closure of 'Saltley Gate' and miners' views of the significance of the event for the working class. Interwar living and working conditions are considered.
