TitleHandsworth Community Theatre Project
LevelSub Collection
DescriptionThis project was set up by Banner Theatre as a multi-racial group of young people to explore the history and development of Handsworth. The Theatre Company worked with local residents to pass on the skills necessary to compile and perform a series of musical documentary shows in this part of Birmingham. A diversity of skills was acquired by participants, including researching, interviewing and transcribing, photography, scriptwriting, song and music composition and singing. Most of the group were young and of African Caribbean or South Asian origin. The first show performed was 'Kids on the Dole'.

A Research and Documentary Team produced a section of script which considered Handsworth from Domesday to the Industrial Revolution. This was then developed by the Project's Drama and Songwriting groups.

As well as records in this sequence, details of the Handsworth Community Theatre Project are contained within Administrative, financial and funding sequences of the Banner Collection.
