TitleLetter. William Archibald Douglas (Cape Coast Castle) to Isabella Strutt (St Peters, Derby). 15 Apr.
LevelItem
Date1799
DescriptionReports on his improving financial situtation. He thinks he will not stay for more than three years in Africa. He needs a regular supply of Indian goods from England to sell 'to the whites wholesale and to the natives retail' in exchange for gold dust. He thinks that there is more money to be made in Africa in this way than by concentrating solely on the slave trade, which he thinks no man can engage in unless by necessity. Gives details about his visit to the Governor in chief of the Dutch settlement on the coast.
