TitleLetters to and from Joseph Douglas Strutt
LevelSub Series
Date1800 - 1821
DescriptionThis section consist of letters written to Joseph Douglas Strutt by members of his family, including his father Joseph Strutt, his mother Isabella Strutt, his sisters Isabella Galton (nee Strutt) and Caroline Hurt (nee Strutt) and his brother-in-law John Howard Galton, and by friends and others, including his tutor Edward Higginson, and his tutors at York, Rev Charles Wellbeloved and John Kenrick. A major theme of the correspondence from both family members and others is Strutt's tour of Europe which he began in 1820. Letters from Isabella Galton and John Howard Galton contain advice and suggested itineraries, while those from Joseph Strutt and from William Llewellyn concern administrative arrangements, specifically related to Strutt's voyage from Malta to Turkey. Other letters concern his travelling companions, letters of introduction to British expatriates in cities he intends to visit, and purchases of paintings and antiques made while abroad. Another major theme of the correspondence is Strutt's education and his interest in politics. Letters from his tutors and from his father Joseph Strutt discuss his academic progress, and letters written by Joseph Strutt when his son was in Europe discuss events related to the divorce trial of Queen Caroline and the need for political reform.
