| Description | Recording of interview by Philip Donnellan of Captain Alfred Ernest Horton (AEH) of Poole, Dorset (1883-1974) on 'Sailing Ships' where he describes his experiences on large cargo sailing ships abroad and a ship wreck.
Track 1: Duration (min/sec): 3.36 Description of track: AEH describes a fruitless persistent attempt by a captain to get around Cape Horn rather than waiting for better weather; describes similar problems locally trying to get around Spurn [Point] and Bridlington Bay [E Yorkshire] in bad weather
Track 2: Duration (min/sec): 2.17 Description of track: AEH sings a sea song ['Scarborough to Robin Hood's Bay' first line] and shanty ['Sally Brown' first line] and they discuss the number of choruses in a sea shanty
Track 3: Duration (min/sec): 10.31 Description of track: AEH describes some of his local and international journeys from 1898 onwards with details of the ports and cargo. He also describes the navigation exams he took to get his 'ticket', initially as second mate and then as first mate.
