ArrangementThe tapes have been arranged as follows: a sequence of field recordings made on 5 inch tape and arranged according to the numbers on the original boxes (MS 4000/6/1/17/1-41); then a sequence of 10 inch tapes (MS 4000/6/1/17/42-48). These tapes are copies of field recordings originally made on 5 inch tape. Although the numbers on the boxes indicate that these are copies of field recordings made at the same time as the recordings catalogued in MS 4000/6/1/17/1-41, they have been listed separately because they were dubbed onto 10 inch tape at a later date.

The rest of the tapes comprise two incomplete series of interviews with Sam Larner (MS 4000/6/1/17/49-52 and MS 4000/6/1/17/53-55); music and sound effects (MS 4000/6/1/17/56-60); the broadcast programme (MS 4000/6/1/17/61-64). Part of a later interview with Sam Larner, recorded in 1961, has also been included because it includes many of the same incidents and songs as the 'Singing the Fishing' actuality (MS 4000/6/1/17/65-66).
AdminHistory'Singing the Fishing', the third Radio Ballad, was based on the songs and stories of the men and women of the herring fishing fleets of East Anglia and northeast Scotland. It was first broadcast on 16 August 1960 and won the Prix d'Italia in October of the same year.

According to the closing credits, 'Singing the Fishing was the work of Ewan MacColl and Charles Parker with music direction by Peggy Seeger.'
