Interview with Mr. D. Barrett of Gateshead about the manufacturing of optics. He talks about the background to the establishment of the optical department, the components made there, and how instruments with a high measuring capability are produced. He discusses the work done in the department by a visually impaired man, George, his apprehension about employing George, changes to workplace procedures, how quickly the other employees became used to working with him, and George's productivity and normality as an employee. He discusses how blind people apprehend things through touch, techniques developed by unsighted people using other senses, essential skills of the optical trade and the greater abilities of George in certain jobs than sighted employees (tracks 2-9).

Interview with Jack Gray. He talks about losing his sight and ways of dealing with this (tracks 9-10).

Mr D. Barrett continues to discuss and demonstrate the jobs done by George in the optical department, and to explain adaptions made to some of the cutting machines, including the addition of braille dials (tracks 11-12).
