DescriptionInterview with Mr Wilson, Ministry of Labour, London. He talks about the work of the pre-vocational assessment centre at Hethersett, run by the RNIB (Royal National Institute for the Blind) and his own assessment of people by their voice rather than their physical characteristics. He discusses the development of 'blindisms' in blind children as an outlet for restrained energy, the assumptions that sighted people make about them, the sense of inferiority and lack of confidence for many blind people, and the dominance of sighted attitudes towards the lives and experiences of blind people. He talks about changing attitudes towards people with disabilities, his own experiences of mobility training, research on the differences in spatial perception between sighted and blind people, the importance of confidence, and the use of guide dogs, the long cane and the sonic torch (tracks 1-6).
