Interview with Mr W. Cunliffe, director of the RNIB Vocational Guidance Centre for Blind Adolescents at Hethersett, Surrey. He continues to talk about difficulties faced by blind people, explains the use of 'teaching machines' in schools, and discusses the introduction of the CSE qualification in secondary modern schools for blind children. He gives his opinion about the need for sighted people to gain a greater understanding of the blind person's problems in a realistic way and emphasises the importance of honesty in teaching blind students. He discusses the effects of some of the traditional limitations on the development of young people due to loss of sight and the opportunity offered to teachers at Hethersett to make changes by teaching social initiative. He explains the purpose of some of the training activities, and describes how individual students are assessed in their use of weaving looms, peg boards, sewing machines and pottery wheels (tracks 2-7).
