This is a recording of a protest meeting called by NUPE to oppose cuts in health services proposes by Birmingham Area Health Authority (See also MS 4000/6/81/33). A range of trade unions from many Birmingham hospitals attended. Tracks 1 - 8 concern papers circulated by the organisers outlining options for action against the cuts. Tracks 9 - 20 record comments made by attendees.
Reference is made to the experience of closure at Hounslow Hospital (Tracks 1 & 10 - 11) and a call is made for an effective investigative committee to be established to check statements and proposals issued by Birmingham Area Health Authority (Track 11). The creation of South Birmingham Joint Action Committee against closures is noted (Track 10).
Hospitals referred to include Birmingham Accident (Track 9), Moseley Hall (Tracks 10 -11)Romsley Hall (Tracks 16 - 18 and East Birmingham (Track 20). Also mentioned are Birmingham Women's and Maternity hospitals and Sorrento Hospital (Track 14). Proposed expansion plans for Sandwell Hospital are noted (Track 17).
Margaret Stanton addresses the meeting in a private capacity and provides background information and comments on the local health bodies (Tracks 11 - 15). A spokesman for Birmingham District Labour Party urges concerted action by the local Labour movement against the cuts (Tracks 19 - 20).
