This is a continuation of Charles Parker's interview with Margaret Stanton. Aspects of medical provision in South Birmingham are discussed, as well as pressures on the health service.
Track 1 considers provision of geriatric and mental handicap services. Reference is made to Professor Court's Committee on healthcare provision for children (Track 2). 'Bed blocking' and the need for preventative medicine are discussed (Tracks 3 -4). The anti-smoking campaign introduced by South Birmingham Community Health Council is considered (Track 4).
Hospital waiting lists are discussed, and an assessment of the impact of private consultations on these is given (Tracks 4 - 6). Ward closures and nursing shortages are considered (Track 7 -8). Reference is made to the 1976 Halsbury Award for nurses' pay & conditions (Track 7). Funding restrictions on the health service are discussed, including allocations to teaching hospitals at the expense of other services and the impact of the RCCS (Revenue Consequences of Capital Spending) (Tracks 2 & 9 - 11). Tracks 11 - 14 explain the structure of the NHS, and the inter-relationship between health service and local authorities is considered.
Hospitals referred to include Rubery Hill (Track 1), the Royal Orthopaedic (Woodlands) (Tracks 6 - 8) and Selly Oak (Tracks 3 & 9 - 10). The Queen Elizabeth Hospital's policy towards geriatric cases is discussed, with reference to the Emergency Beds Scheme in South Birmingham (Tracks 2 - 3).
