The first part of the tape contains an interview in Greek with Dimitri Alexiou, interpreted by George and Margaret Thomson, who discusses the importance and historical position of folk songs in Greece, the relations of the folk tradition to the Byzantine Greek Orthodox church, the musical education of children, and different singing styles and methods of ornamentation. This is followed by a recording of songs on a jukebox in a Greek bar, and an interview with Nikos, a clarinet player, who talks about the music he plays and the oral and written traditions of music |
