TitleLetter from Elizabeth Taylor to John and Mary Jane Taylor
LevelItem
Date17 November 1872
DescriptionElizabeth thanks her mother for her recent letters and remarks that a rule had been introduced by the school's principals that girls attending the school 'may only be photographed once a month'. Elizabeth notes how she had been chosen to play in a musical competition.

Elizabeth writes about the Christmas parcel which she hoped to receive from home, asking her mother 'will you send a cake as well as plumpuding & biscuits & sweets?'. Elizabeth remarks on the weather, noting that it had been snowing and freezing 'so fiercely' in Saxe-Meiningen for the whole week. Elizabeth apologises to her Mother for using the word 'beastly' in her letters and asks if the girls could have some extra clothes, including petticoats, owing to the cold weather.

The second section of the letter is addressed to Elizabeth's father and thanks him for his letter and card. Elizabeth asks her father to send her a book called The Post of Honour' and the Sunday magazines, noting that another girl, Lizzie Dunlop regularly received magazines which were scarce in Saxe-Meiningen. Following remarks by her father that she should make a closer friend of her elder sister Margaret, Elizabeth writes that the two sisters struggled to find things to talk about.
