TitleLetter from Elizabeth Taylor to John and Mary Jane Taylor
LevelItem
Date09 December 1872
DescriptionIn this letter Elizabeth expresses her excitement about the approaching Christmas festivities.

The letter is particularly notable as it describes a 'dreadful' incident which had recently occurred in Saxe-Meiningen. Elizabeth writes that the local baker's man had been found stabbed, 'lying with his head in the water & feet up in the air, dead!' Elizabeth reports that the police were investigating the incident but were not yet sure whether the man had committed suicide or had been murdered.

Elizabeth writes about the freezing weather, noting that there had been ice '2 or 3 inches thick' in the gardens. She also remarks that she had been to have her photograph taken but had been 'stupid enough to move' meaning that she had to go again on the following Tuesday to have another taken.

At their Church service on Sunday Elizabeth writes that the Minister had 'been preaching about the events of last week, the murder, & a lot of different dreadful things that had happened'. Elizabeth also refers to the parcel from home which she was eagerly anticipating and writes about money which she needed to buy a present for all of the girls at the school in Saxe-Meiningen.
