TitleLetter from Elizabeth Taylor to John and Mary Jane Taylor
LevelItem
Date[n.d. 30 October 1873]
DescriptionElizabeth dates this letter 'Thursday 30th' adding 'Potato Holiday' opposite the date. The letter refers to the death of Elizabeth's grandmother Elizabeth Taylor (nee Harris). Later in the letter Elizabeth complains about being forbidden from attending the theatre owing to her parents' Quaker beliefs, noting that she was the only girl who was left behind from school theatre trips and writing that it was 'very lonely'. Elizabeth writes about her academic progress including the difficulties she was experiencing in her French class. She refers to the price of German books and complains that the school was 'unbearable' because of its strict discipline, adding that all the girls were miserable.

Please note that the first two pages of this letter feature crossed writing and are difficult to read in places.

Although the year is not given in the date of this letter, it is possible to suggest that it was written in 1873 given that Elizabeth refers to Guy Faulks Day, typically the 5th of November, suggesting that the letter was written at the end of October 1873.
