| Description | This section contains letters sent to Elizabeth Taylor by her younger sister Janet Taylor whilst Elizabeth was attending school in Saxe-Meiningen. Many of the letters were written by Janet whilst she was attending school at Ravensworth Lodge in Scarborough.
Letters sent to Elizabeth in 1872 before Janet went to school describe events at home including the development of the Taylors' house and a chimney fire at a neighbouring property. Many of Janet's letters refer to visits by relatives and family friends as well as accounts of her trip to Kelvedon with the girls' eldest sister Margaret. A number of Janet's letters also refer to the Taylor family's involvement in philanthropic work, such as their association with the 'Self Supporting Working Boys Home'. The letters reflect the close relationship between Janet and Elizabeth Taylor and provide an insight into girls' experiences of schooling in England and Germany during the late nineteenth century. |
