| Title | Letter from Mary Jane Taylor to Margaret and Elizabeth Taylor |
| Level | Item |
| Date | 08 January 1873 |
| Description | In this letter Mary Taylor sends her daughters good wishes for the new year and writes that she hoped they were now 'hard at work' following their holidays. She remarks on Margaret's German school friends and Elizabeth's account of New Year's Eve. She also comments on Elizabeth's 'crossed writing' which had made her letter home difficult to read.
Mary Taylor writes about a visit to the Camberwell Workhouse with the girls' cousin Hannah Lucas where they had assisted at a 'treat' for the inmates. She refers to the family's involvement with Band of Hope work and the Peckham First-Day School. Mary Taylor's letter also includes details about recent family activities with relatives and visits by the prominent Quaker Jonathan Grubb. Her letter concludes with remarks about the death of the former Emperor of France Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte (Napoleon III). Mary Taylor also comments on the publication of her husband John Taylor's writings and presents which the family had received for the new year. |
