TitleLetter from Maria Miall to Elizabeth (Elsie) Taylor
LevelItem
Date20 October 1872
DescriptionMaria Miall apologises for not replying to Elizabeth Taylor's letters sooner and for writing 'dull short' letters. She refers to a visit to Saxe-Meiningen by Elizabeth's parents John and Mary Taylor and writes that she was pleased to hear about Elizabeth's progress with German. Miall also asks after Elizabeth's relatives, noting that she rarely heard from Sunbury any longer and commenting that Elizabeth's sister Janet Taylor had stopped writing to her.

Maria Miall remarks that she had been surprised to hear that Margaret and Elizabeth were participating in dancing lessons. She writes 'I thought "Friends" did not approve of that amusement'. Maria asks Elizabeth a number of questions about her schooling in Germany and provides an account of her recent activities in Dorset, describing renovations which the Read family were making to their home.

Please note that the last three pages of this letter feature crossed writing and are difficult to read in places.
