TitleCorrespondence between Elizabeth (Elsie) Taylor and her mother Mary Jane Taylor
LevelSub Series
Date1860 - 1877
DescriptionThis section contains a large number of letters exchanged between Elizabeth Taylor and her mother Mary Jane Taylor (nee Cash, died 1887) which were written whilst they were away from home visiting relatives. The letters provide an insight into life in the Taylor family during Elizabeth Taylor's childhood and adolescence up to 1877.

A number of the letters written to Elizabeth Taylor by her mother Mary Jane Taylor were sent whilst Elizabeth was living with her uncle and aunt Frederick and Martha Goodall Cash and their children. Elizabeth Taylor stayed with the Goodall Cash family when she was aged nine following the birth of her younger sister Annie Frances (born 1868). Many of these letters feature descriptions of home life and family activities including accounts of visits to relatives which reflect the close relationships between the Taylors, their extended family and wide circle of friends, many of whom were also Quakers. A number of the later letters in this section refer to Elizabeth Taylor's philanthropic work in Peckham as a young woman, including her involvement with the Peckham Friends' First-day School. Many of these letters feature advice from Mary Taylor, supporting and guiding her daughter in this work. Comments by Mary Taylor also provide an insight into her perceptions of broader social, cultural, economic and political issues during the latter half of the nineteenth century.
