| Description | This section contains a typescript and final printed version of a biographical article about Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury which was featured in 'Edgbastonia', a magazine established in Birmingham in 1881 for circulation in Edgbaston, a western suburb of the city. Published in December 1914, the article describes Taylor Cadbury's youth and early philanthropic work before providing an account of her involvement in the development of Bournville during the 1890s and her association with various national groups supporting social welfare. Much detail about the Taylor family and Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury's Quaker faith also features in the article. A later letter relating to this article from 1947 is also included in this section.
It is difficult to ascertain whether Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury wrote this article herself for publication in 'Edgbastonia', as a typescript does survive amongst her personal papers. In addition, the letter accompanying the typescript reveals that she sent a copy of the article to the 'Evening Despatch' newspaper some years later, indicating that she may have been the author. However, the article is written in the third person, suggesting that it was written by another person and sent to Taylor Cadbury for approval before being featured in the magazine. It is likely that Taylor Cadbury was responsible for editing the content of the article. |
