| Title | Papers relating to Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury and the 'British Women's Appeal for Women and Children in India and Pakistan' |
| Level | Sub Series |
| Date | November 1947 |
| Description | This section contains papers relating to an appeal by a group of British women to provide relief for women and children in India and Pakistan affected by the Partition conflicts following the passing of the Indian Independence Bill. The appeal arose from discussions between British women including Margaret Corbett-Ashby and Agatha Harrison, themselves both publically involved in philanthropic and political work concerning India, and Dame Edwina Mountbatten, Countess Mountbatten of Burma (1901-1960), the Vicereine of India and Director of the United Council of Relief and Welfare. The appeal supported a similar effort by the British Red Cross Society to provide food, shelter and medical supplies to support refugees in India and Pakistan.
It is significant that many women involved in earlier appeals concerning Anglo-English relations appear named amongst these papers, reflecting Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury's involvement in a social network of women associated with international philanthropic work. |
