TitleElizabeth Taylor Cadbury's personal diary for 1896
LevelItem
Date01 January 1896 - 31 December 1896
DescriptionThis small volume is a Charles Letts's leather covered 'improved pocket diary and cash book' embossed with gold decoration. A letter written to Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury from her husband George Cadbury is enclosed loosely in an envelope in the front of this diary. The first eight to nine pages of the diary contain general printed information including a calendar marked with the dates of religious festivals and blank pages for addresses and memoranda. The diary, featuring two days per page, includes detailed entries written by Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury relating to her personal activities and news concerning her family and friends. An empty envelope addressed to Richenda Scott, the author of Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury's biography 'Elizabeth Cadbury: 1858-1951' published in 1955 and postmarked from Birmingham, 28th October 1952, is also enclosed loose in the diary. Pieces torn from this envelope feature throughout the diary amongst entries for May 1896 and July 1896. It is possible that the envelope was used by Scott to mark certain entries in Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury's diary whilst she was researching for her biography during the early 1950s. Significantly these markers relate to entries where Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury commented on the development and opening of 'The Beeches' and the organisation of holidays to the country for children living in urban districts.
