TitleLetter from Howard Taylor to Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury
LevelItem
Date14 December 1949
DescriptionThis letter features a pencil annotation which reads 'Interesting letter from Howard Taylor Re his work etc.' The letter is on headed paper marked De Beers Consolidated Mines Limited, Kimberley, South Africa. In his letter Howard Taylor wishes Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury a happy Christmas and describes plans for his own family celebration. He remarks on his work for De Beers, commenting particularly on the forthcoming 'First Aid competitions for Natives'. Taylor's comments reflect the difference in attitudes to race during the 1940s compared to the present day. He writes:

'I have always felt that the Natives take a great interest in First Aid and are extremely skilled at it if they are given instruction. I feel, too, that it is work that carries a permanent benefit because, not only can they render First Aid in the case of an accident at the Mine, but it gives them an added skill to take back home'.

Howard Taylor also refers to recent family activities and the weather in Kimberley. He provides a detailed description of Jagersfontein Mine which had recently re-opened after being closed during the depression and remarks on the educational progress of his son Howard and daughter Claire Taylor.
