| Title | Letter from John Taylor to Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury and George Cadbury |
| Level | Item |
| Date | [n.d. c. December 1888] |
| Description | In this letter John Taylor thanks his daughter and son-in-law for sending him a 'Superb Book' as a Christmas present. He writes that he would 'prize it very highly' and remarks on 'the individual Brush work' of the artist. It is possible that this book was 'Japan, a Record in Colour' by the painter Mortimer Luddington Menpes (1855-1938) which was first published in 1888 and revised in 1901. Reflecting Victorian attitudes to race, John Taylor comments 'Menpes has lived so long in Japan he has become more Japanese than the Japs'. John Taylor concludes his letter by wishing Elizabeth and George Cadbury 'all the best wishes of the pleasant season'. |
