| Description | In this short postcard George Newman refers to a visit by a boy who referred to himself as 'Jack' Cadbury, one of Elizabeth and George Cadbury's sons. It is probable that the boy was Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury's eldest son Laurence John Cadbury. Newman describes Jack Cadbury as 'merry & bright' and with 'a good healthy look in his eyes' which told of 'high soul & of good blood'. Following these remarks Newman comments 'I think they will not get to Servia', directing Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury to destroy the postcard 'at once'. It is possible that Jack Cadbury had approached Sir George Newman about serving in the Friends' Ambulance Unit. This postcard suggests that Newman intended to prevent him from becoming involved with the unit's work in Servia, perhaps for the sake of his family. However, Laurence Cadbury did become involved with the work of the Friends Ambulance Unit in France and was awarded the Croix de Guerre for his services. |
