TitleLetter from George Newman to Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury
LevelItem
Date1943
DescriptionIn this letter George Newman remarks on an event held to celebrate the centenary of 'The Friend', the journal of the Society of Friends. Newman comments that he had thought the speeches were 'rather poor', adding however that 'the company was excellent'. He comments on the speech about George Cadbury which he had delivered at the Manor House in 1937 when he had suffered an attack of vertigo. Newman's letter includes comments about the contemporary political situation, remarking that he thought Primeminister Winston Churchill was 'A1 as War Minister'. He also provides a brief description of the lawyer and politician Sir (Richard) Stafford Cripps who had been made Leader of the House of Commons by Churchill in Feburary 1942. In addition Newman comments about the South African Primeminister Jan Christiaan Smuts and the American Predient Franklin Roosevelt and his wife Eleanor Roosevelt. Newman concludes his letter with further praise of Winston Churchill writing:

'I have just heard on the B.B.C. that Churchill is back in England. I am much relieved. He is what is called "the devil to take care of", & no wonder. What a great war-leader he is'.

In the final letter written by George Newman to Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury which survives in the Cadbury Family Papers, Newman sends Taylor Cadbury 'now, as always, the love & admiration & even reverence of a devoted friend & admirer'.
