TitleNote relating to invitations to Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury's English-Speaking Union Party and the second page of her letter to Carl Heath
LevelItem
Date21 August 1939
DescriptionThis note records responses to invitations which Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury had issued, asking various people to attend her English-Speaking Union party on Friday 1st September 1939. Addressed 'Winchcombe - N. Cheltenham', the note states that Miss Adlard was pleased to accept an invitation to meet with Taylor Cadbury on 1st September 1939. Following Miss Adlard's acceptance is a note relating to Mr. E. H. Milrain who was unable to attend the party owing to a prior engagement.
The reverse of the note features the second page of the typescript of a letter which Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury was writing to Carl Heath. Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury appears to have been concerned about the importance given to pacifism within Quakerism during this period. Taylor Cadbury was actively involved with the Friends' Service Council which supported the international and missionary service of the Society of Friends. She refers to the case of a Friend named Grace Adlem from Shanghai who had been accepted to the Council despite being unable to define herself as a pacifist 'at this time, when we are engaged in a totalitarian war'. Taylor Cadbury concludes her letter remarking 'I think there are a number of Friends who do not now feel able to say that they are fully and definitely pacifist; they feel that they cannot remain neutral and absolutely pacific under present circumstances.'
Please note that additional pencil annotations added by Taylor Cadbury to this typescript have been included in the quotations above.
