TitleLetter from Henrietta Barnett to Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury
LevelItem
Date08 May 1923
DescriptionIn this letter Henrietta Barnett describes an event which she had organised to teach pupils and staff associated with educational work in Hampstead about Bournville. Barnett writes that she had distributed a book produced by the Cadburys and had told the audience about the Cadbury factory at Bournville. She notes that Cadbury chocolate boxes had also been distributed at the meeting. Barnett describes how she had told the audience about George Cadbury's 'great good character' and also about Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury. She remarks that many of the young people present had promised 'to try & follow' George Cadbury's teachings. Barnett adds that she had 'told them how the Village was the parent of this Suburb, & explained the spread of the Spirit'. The letter also includes remarks about arrangements to expand the provision of educational facilities in Hampstead. Barnett concludes with remarks about the book which she had distributed to the audience, writing that she had told them that the book was Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury's gift to them and asking her to send thirty five further copies.

The school referred to in this letter may have been the institute designed by Edwin Lutyens which Barnett established in the Hampstead Garden Suburb or the Dame Henrietta Barnett School for girls which she founded in Hampstead in 1918. The booklet which Barnett refers may have been the Suggested Rules of Health booklet which was produced by George Cadbury and distributed by Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury to residents in Bournville.
