| AdminHistory | Sir Raymond Priestley (1886-1974) served as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Birmingham from 1938 to 1952, following a successful international career in geological research. In 1907 he accompanied Sir Ernest Shackleton on the British Antarctic Expedition and later supported the establishment of educational institutions oversees. As his letter to Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury suggests, Priestley remained enthusiastic about the value of travel and his experiences in the Antarctic, lecturing on the subject to students at Cambridge University and to servicemen during the Second World War.
Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury maintained a close association with the University of Birmingham throughout her life and was awarded an honorary MA by the institution in 1919 for her services to education in Birmingham. Taylor Cadbury was one of foundation members of the University of Birmingham's Board of Governors, appointed as a Lady Governor following the awarding of the University's Royal Charter in 1900. |
