DescriptionFrances Temple (1890-1984, nee Acland Anson), the wife of Dr. William Temple, wrote to Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury following a request she had received from Taylor Cadbury asking for a copy of a letter which Temple had written about her husband. Frances Temple's letter had referred to her husband's remarks on 'death & future life'. In her letter to Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury Frances Temple recalls visiting Taylor Cadbury with her husband. Dr. William Temple died in October 1944 shortly before the end of the Second World War. In her letter Frances Temple expresses her regret that her husband had not lived 'to carry on his work into the time of re-construction'.

AdminHistoryDr. William Temple (1881-1944) served as Archbishop of York (1929-1942) and as Archbishop of Canterbury from 1942 until his death in 1944. Temple was a leader of the international ecumenical movement, chairing the World Conference on Faith and Order and a leading public supporter of the World Council of Churches in the late 1930s. Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury was closely involved in the religious and social welfare work with which Temple was associated, including the Workers Educational Union and the housing of refugees following the outbreak of the Second World War. Scott describes Taylor Cadbury's support for international ecumenical work in which Temple became a leading figure, noting her enthusiasm for endeavours which aimed to achieve a greater unity between religious denominations.
