| Description | This booklet pays tribute to the work of Miss Agnes Hedenstrom and her colleagues, celebrating their Scandinavian Sailors' Home in East London. The booklet begins with an exemplary story illustrating the positive influence of the clubs and hostels established to support foreign sailors on their arrival in London, providing 'a quiet haven for the godly sailor'.
The booklet provides a brief biography of Agnes Hedenstrom and the establishment of the original Scandinavian Sailors' Home in October 1880. It also appeals for financial support from Christian people 'who have sympathy with a work which cares for both the souls and bodies of seamen.'
The booklet describes life inside the Home which included daily prayers, the reading of Scripture and Bible classes. Swedish-speaking meetings were also held at the Scandinavian Room in the Strangers' Rest, the nearby club for sailors where Elizabeth Taylor volunteered before becoming involved with Agnes Hedenstrom's Home.
The last pages of the booklet feature copies of letters written by sailors who had visited the Strangers' Rest and the Temperance Home. A letter from Mr. T. A. Denny, an important supporter of the Home's work is also featured thanking Miss Hedenstrom for her efforts on behalf of Scandinavian sailors. |
