TitleLetter from Elizabeth Taylor to Mary Jane Taylor
LevelItem
DateMarch 1885
DescriptionIn this letter Elizabeth Taylor writes about the provisions which she would need from home, such as an apron and photographs. Many of these were being brought to Elizabeth in France by her friend Lily Davey who visited her whilst she was staying in Paris.

Elizabeth describes her visit to the dispensary where she was shown around and given an introduction to the work which she would be undertaking. Elizabeth writes that she would be required to read and explain passages from the Bible to patients who were waiting to see the doctor. She remarks that she had been made responsible for German patients owing to her proficiency in speaking the German language.

In this letter Elizabeth also describes her first home visits, commenting on the poor interior condition of the houses which were cramped and 'horribly close'. She includes remarks about her visits to Parisian landmarks and churches and notes that she had helped to make clothes for children in the mission's orphanage. The letter reveals that Elizabeth was also helping to run a Sunday school, overseeing a class of young girls.

Elizabeth concludes her letter noting that she was finding her voluntary work in Paris more interesting now that she was actually taking part in the work, rather than just watching and learning. Her letter includes a variety of other comments relating to the fashion for wearing hats and bigamist marriages in Paris.
