AdminHistoryJoseph Rowntree, a prominent Quaker chocolate manufacturer from Yorkshire set up three trusts in the so-called Founder’s Memorandum written in 1904: the Joseph Rowntree Village Trust, the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust and the Joseph Rowntree Social Services Trust. The trusts have evolved over the last century, developing their outputs to address continuing and changing social pressures and political issues. The Rowntree trusts provided a model for the establishment of the Barrow and Geraldine S. Cadbury Trust.

The shared Quaker ethos of the Cadbury and Rowntree families led to a natural partnership on a variety of strategic issues in the trusts and foundation sector including collaboration on race relations through the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust Race Relations Working Group.
