Applicant overview: Peace People was established in 1976 following a tragic shooting and car crash involving the British Army and the IRA. Peace People, 1) work for the creation of a just and peaceful society in Northern Ireland, 2) bring young people together through the group Youth for Peace, 3) provide support and advice for prisoners and their families, and operate a resettlement scheme through which ex-prisoners and others can escape from the vicious cycle of violence and fear, 4) promote dialogue between political groups, inform people about political and social issues, 5) campaign for the creation in Northern Ireland of a system of justice based on the highest standards of justice and respect for human rights, 6) work through an open democratic structure, 7) publish the monthly newspaper 'Peace by Peace', and 8) provide proof every day that Northern Irish people can work together to peacefully solve their problems.
