The organisation was established in 1983 with the support of the Northern Ireland Voluntary Trust (NIVT). BWEP aims to, 1) provide free classes in local areas in response to women's needs, 2) advance a kind of education based on the wealth of women's experience, 3) arrange childcare facilities where necessary enabling women to attend discussion groups, 4) provide training for tutors, 5) promote an awareness, in both the voluntary and statutory sectors, of the educational needs of women, and 6) campaign for flexible classes and greater access to educational opportunities.
