DescriptionGrant file containing correspondence, minutes, agendas, grant overviews, reports, copies of published material, project proposals and funding requests relating to various grant applications linked to the short term strategy against the Asylum and Immigration Bill 1996. Funding source(s): Barrow Cadbury Trust. Applicant overview: In response to the proposed Asylum and Immigration Bill 1996 a number of short-term action research projects were created as well as a series of independent hearings termed the Gildewell Panel. The research projects are timed to gather and deliver evidence for the duration of the hearings. In addition to assessing the implications of the 1996 Bill some of the research aims to investigate social security cuts. Nature of support: In 1996 the Trust agreed to allocate up to £15,000 for projects in this area. A single grant of £5,489 was approved to offset the expenses of the Gildewell Panel. A grant of £2,250 was approved to the Commission for Racial Equality and Refugee Council (CRERC) to look into the implications of social security cuts. A grant for similar purposes was approved for £2,625 to the Scottish Refugee Council (SRC). The Immigration Law Practitioners' Association (ILPA) was allocated £1,125 to compile ministerial statements. Two grants were made to the Asylum Rights Campaign (ARC) to evaluate procedures and to provide an analysis of adjudicators' decision making in asylum appeals.
