Applicant overview: In 1995 a joint proposal was made by the University of Birmingham Department of Psychiatry and the Northern Birmingham Mental Health Trust to research the mental health needs of asylum seekers in the United Kingdom. The project aims to, 1) identify existing organisations involved with the mental health needs of asylum seekers in Birmingham, 2) examine the extent of psychiatric morbidity amongst asylum seekers who are in detention and amongst those who have been recently released, 3) identify ways of responding appropriately to the psychological needs of such detainees, and 4) make the results of this investigation available to interested parties and to the wider public. Nature of support: In 1995 the Trust agreed to a single grant of £19,000 to support the research project for the year 1995/1996. In 1996 on the advice of Relevant Trustees of the Civil Rights Programme a further grant of £5,178 was agreed for 1996/1997. Minutes: BCT 57, BCT 329, CRP 5/96.
