Applicant overview: Article 19 was founded in 1986 by Roger MacArthur, a US philanthropist and journalist. Article 19's over-riding concern is to achieve practical change that improves freedom of expression and access to information for everyone. Article 19 applies a free speech analysis to all aspects of life including public health, the environment, social exclusion which involves examining the rights of different groups within society to access information and to access the media. In 2002 Article 19 launched the Project on Refugees and Freedom of Expression in the UK. The Project aims to promote conditions in which 1) refugees and asylum seekers enjoy their full right of freedom of expression and are empowered to exercise this right, and 2) the public receives a diversity and plurality of information about refugee and asylum issues from the media and also from the government. Nature of support: In 2002 the Trust agreed to a grant of £15,000 for 2002/2003 to enable the writing up and dissemination of project findings. Minutes: BCT 1212.
