DescriptionGrant file containing correspondence, file sheets, grant overviews, reports, financial papers, grant terms and conditions, project proposal, agendas, minutes and project proposals relating to Asylum Aid. Funding source(s): Barrow Cadbury Trust, Asylum, Immigration and Resettlement Programme. Applicant overview: Asylum Aid is an independent charity working with asylum seekers in the UK. The organisation exists because people fleeing persecution and seeking safety need specialist advice and representation to ensure that their applications are properly and fairly assessed. The primary aims of the charity are to, 1) provide asylum seekers in the UK with a free, high quality, legal service, with a particular emphasis on reaching out to the most vulnerable or excluded, 2) use its casework experience to inform and underpin policy work, lobbying and campaigning for fair treatment of all refugees in the UK, and, 3) address the increasing scarcity of specialist legal advice on asylum matters by building the capacity of other providers, particularly those rooted in refugee communities. Minutes: In 1997 three annual grants of £10,000 were approved by the Trust towards asylum appeals work. In 1999 the Trust made a grant of £5,250 towards the increased rent costs incurred by Asylum Aid. This figure was increased to £30,000 and continued for three further years commencing 2001/2002. In 2004 the Trust agreed to grants totalling £108,420 over three years for the recruitment and salary of a Policy and Communication Officer. Minutes: T04/05-10, BCT 491, BCT 802, BCT 946, AIRP 10/00. Notes: File organised by subject. File not numbered.
