Funding source(s): Barrow Cadbury Trust, Disability Programme. Applicant overview: In 1995 following talks between CSIE and the BCC Education Department a five year project was proposed into the provision of inclusive education in the city. CSIE defines inclusive education as education where disabled and non-disabled children and young people learn together in ordinary schools and colleges, with appropriate networks of support. CSIE and the BCC Education Department suggested that the research work be carried out by the Special Education Team at the Open University (OU). The project aims to document and monitor initiatives in inclusive education being implemented in Birmingham and to disseminate these publications within local government and further afield. Nature of support: In 1995 on the advice of Disability Programme Relevant Trustees a grant of up to £6,000 was approved to the BCC Education Department for the inclusive education project. This was later extended to the full five years of the project at £5,000 per annum. In 1999 grant payments were transferred from the OU to Canterbury Christ Church College due to the transfer of the staff out of the OU.
