Applicant overview: SBL was established in 1969 with two primary objectives, 1) to work towards the elimination of racial discrimination within the legal profession, which prevented people from ethnic minority communities from accessing legal education and training opportunities; and, 2) to work towards the achievement of true equality of opportunity and equal access to justice for all people from minority ethnic communities through the provision of effective legal representation, advocacy, education and leadership. The current mission of the SBL is to promote equality and diversity within the legal profession, act as a representative and strategic voice for lawyers, law students, paralegals, jurists and legal academics of African, Caribbean and Asian heritage and campaign to ensure access to justice and legal services for ethnic minority and disadvantaged communities. Nature of support: In 1997 the Trust approved three annual grants at £25,000 for 1997/1998, £20,000 for 1998/1999 and £15,500 for 1999/2000.
