Funding source(s): Barrow and Geraldine S. Cadbury Trust. Applicant overview: The CSCS became a registered charity in 1986. The aims of the organisation are 1) poverty relief among the children of Commonwealth students' children, 2) the advancement of the education of African children, and 3) the provision of recreational facilities or other leisure time occupations in the interests of the social welfare of these children. Nature of support: In 1973 the Trust provided £3,500 to open a CSCS office in Accra, Ghana to function as a reference point for West African students considering whether to bring their children to the UK. In 1974 a £3,000 grant was made to setup a CSCS office in Lagos, Nigeria. In 1975 a small grant was made to cover travel expenses for a CSCS hosted conference at Ibadan University, Nigeria. A further £1,550 was committed to allow additional welfare workers to attend from outside Nigeria. A travel grant of £1,000 was made in 1975 to enable the CSCS General Secretary to meet with the new government in Nigeria over the creation of a centre in Lagos.
