Applicant overview: SAC began as a plan for informal meetings in the United States between Argentinean and UK officials as well as Islanders at the behest of Dr. John Burton, an experienced mediator and conflict researcher. As a consultant he is affiliated with the Department of System Science at City University. SAC was established following this conference in 1983 to follow up on these contacts through City University. Membership includes MPs, academics, politicians and businessmen from all sides of the conflict. The aim of SAC is a peaceful resolution of the Falkland Islands dispute. Nature of support: The Fund initially provided £1,350 towards travel costs for the original conference in the United States at the University of Maryland, though the payment was made by the Trust through City University. Following the conference the Trust made two annual grants of £5,000 to support a research fellowship at City University to support an eventual settlement. In 1984 a further £690 was provided for a follow up meeting at the University of Maryland in which two MPs participated. A further grant to SAC was made for April 1986 to October 1987 in the amount of £9,500. The end of the grant was timed to coincide with the general election, which could greatly affect policy apropos the Falkland Islands.
