| Description | Grant file containing correspondence, minutes, project proposal, funding requests, agendas and newspaper cuttings relating to the Campaign for African Refugees (CAR), later Student Appeal for Refugees in Africa (SARA) organised initially by students from the University of Warwick. Funding source(s): Barrow and Geraldine S. Cadbury Trust. Applicant overview: CAR began as a student organisation at the University of Warwick and expanded to a national student movement with the initial aim of raising £2,000,000 for the permanent settlement of African refugees. The project attracted the support of a number of prominent individuals and organisations but was called off after three weeks due to poor organisation and insufficient time to prepare the appeal set for March 1970. Nature of support: The Trust provided a £500 grant as a 'pump primer' in the words of Charles Cadbury subject to SARA registering as a charity, which it did not. It was subsequently agreed to make the grant in any event to help the organisation close down. Minutes: B&GSCT 3251. Notes: File organised by date from newest to oldest. File not numbered. |
